We get this question a lot: "Should I use Shopify, or get a custom website?" The honest answer depends on one thing: what are you selling?
If you sell products, start with Shopify
Shopify is built for selling things online. Out of the box you get:
- Product pages, a cart and checkout
- Payment options that work for customers in the UAE
- Stock tracking and order management
- Shipping settings and delivery rates
- An app store for reviews, subscriptions, bundles and more
You'd spend a lot of time and money rebuilding all of that from scratch. For fashion, beauty, abaya, perfume and lifestyle brands, Shopify is almost always the right call.
The catch: many Shopify stores look the same because they use the same themes, untouched. A store that looks like your brand, with product pages written to sell, is what makes the difference.
If you sell a service, go custom
Clinics, salons, gyms, consultants, cafes, agencies and event companies don't need a cart. They need people to call, book or send a WhatsApp.
A custom-coded website is usually better here because:
- It's faster. No extra store code slowing it down, which matters on phones and for Google.
- It's built around one goal. Every page leads to "book" or "contact".
- It looks like you. No template to fight with.
What if you do both?
Plenty of businesses sell a service and a few products: a salon with its own haircare line, a gym with supplements. In that case, choose based on what makes most of your money. A service business can link to a small Shopify store, or add simple ordering later.
